It's a bit of a toss-up I think, the G3 units have unlimited range (so I'm told) but only if you have G3 net coverage. If not, and often you may not when you're hunting, I'm not sure what happens but I will ask. My guess is you are back to the Garmin solution of running up a big hill....

Ak is right though, the Garmin has improved with each generation of collar. I've not tried the new version but it is on my long shopping list for next fall..

The worst collar was the dc20, the first one designed to go on the back of your dog with a wast. Terrible for smaller dogs like dachs and drever, alot of problems with broken connections with the antenna, resulting in terrible range. Dc30 first designed as a collar, better I still use mine sometimes. Dc40 first collar designed for the astro 320 (the older was called 220), a better on range and battery. The dc 50 works with 320 but not the 220. The new alpha works with the astro 320 but only with either the 320 or the apha handheld not both at the same time. I would go for the 320 with dc40 or dc 50 dog collars if some of your friends allready have some Garmin Astros, but if you are the first buy the newest Alpha, and a extra long car antenna, and you will find your dog..

thanks a lot, i will check the garmins, because i'm not shire about the cell phone ones because cellular coverage , in the woods here lowers points normally no coverage .
