GPS dog collar

Hi,
What would be the best GPS collar for a blood dog?? the cheap option

What about the mobil ones, you by the collar and check you cell phone where they are?

The Garmin astro used to be "top dog" though I havent been following the market of late

Most hound hunters down here use the Garmin Astro 320.

I took one of the Garmin GPS collars over to Tomaz, I can't remember for sure the model but the Astro 320 sounds correct. I know he really like it. Perhaps he will chime in here. Or you could PM him.

We use Astros for birds, moose etc., can be limted for range on the latter. By blood dog I assume you mean tracking wounded game? So the range required would not be enormous and the Garmin should work well.

When I was in Sweden they units they were using had a range of about 5km, after that it defaulted to cellular towers and they could pick that up on their smart phones drive to that area and then pic the dog up again. I should have paid more attention.

Yes, there a few different systems that use the cell towers. They remain quite popular because they extend the range well beyond what the Garmin offers, and I think that style predated the Garmin system but I could be wrong.

I bought a Garmin Alpha ,I think it was, for a PH friend of mine in Namibia a couple of years ago and he likes it. It has training capability with tone, vibrate and stimulation (thats a polite way of saying shock isn't it).

I know it worked fine, as I was there, we were able to track one of his dogs both visually and with the Garmin on a track and when she picked up a different scent track and veered off he stimulated her and she got back on track.

It's not cheap but it worked well.

5klms is nothing for a fit and lost dog to cover in a very short time, especially if he is distressed.
I ran my GSP 12 klms this morning on the bike, and this afternoon he is annoying me for a swim.
Some days I am glad when he goes to bed...

They used the cellular unit via their smart phones to get within range that they could then pick up on the garmin. Was a very good system where there is cellular coverage because the elkhounds could easily run 20km chasing a moose.

This is the one one of my friends uses to keep track of his moose dogs. He likes it, although there are issues with battery time for the mobile but that is easily fixed. I only have bird dogs, so I use Garmin and have no personal experience with the Tracker units. It is Finnish I think.. May not have maps etc outside Europe but you could ask...

Most up here use the garmin astro or alpha, they set a new standard when they came out. I`ve been using them since they came out inn the us. And 5 km was on the short side when it comes to range, if you use extra antennas or goo to a high point. you can track them for much longer than 5km. The collars are getting better and better as well.
