the birds are back...

Post by Vaughan »

Finally had a weekend off from moose hunting (aka staring into the forest) and went out for a few birds with the young dog. It ended up being rifle work rather than using guns over the pointer but it was fun anyway :D

Mirri wondering why I bought along the pointy thing, rather than the 12 bore, when he thought we were going hunting....

Sunday's enetertainment started when I spotted a few birds in a tree out in a big clear-cut as I drove into our hunting area. I drove on a few hundred meters past them then got out and carefully went back to try to shoot one – leaving Mirri in the car. I was laying in the snow to take the shot and suddenly had this heavy breathing in my left ear! The bloody dog had climbed over into the back seat pushed the door open and crept up on me and there he was crouched at my left shoulder in the snow focussed intently in the direction I was aiming (and panting in my ear) – scared the hell out of me…… I don’t think he could have seen the bird, it was 200m away, so I guess he was just “seconding” me. I told him to stay, calmed my heart rate back down a bit and shot the bird. The dog didn’t move. More surprising, when I took the shot maybe as many as 100 blackcock lifted from the ground and the trees behind the one I shot and flew directly over us about 10m up. He still didn’t move. Better still, once I took the rifle out of battery and stood to go collect the bird I noticed the birds had sat down about 200m behind us so we walked maybe 5 steps, I told him to sit and stay again, lay down and shot another blackcock. Again he stayed down. We then got up and I let him find the two birds. I shot a 3rd one with him later on. It was a good day but no caper, and not much snow yet.....

Never heard of that bird before. Looks like a good sized one. Funny bit on the dog breathing in your ear...  I grew up on the farm and had a dashound that would accompany me any time I went hunting. His job was to run ahead and spook all the critters so I didn't have anything to shoot at! Little butthead.....  Sounds like your dog is coming right along though in NOT doing that. Good looking dog too.

Sounds like a good hunt, at least Mirri didn't breathe on the scope and fog it up for you

Champ,
These birds are also called black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and are very common in the boreal forest zone but, I believe, loosing ground elsewhere in Europe (the UK for instance). Difficult but very fun to hunt with pointing or flushing dogs early in the season. Difficult because you tend to find them in fairly thick forest so you need to be quick..... The other fellow we have is capercaille or wood grouse (Tetrao urogallus) and they are really impressive birds. The males are up to about 5kg in weight. They seem to be a little bit over-confident and therefore a little to easy to shoot for their own good so in our hunting area I tend to leave 'em be for the most part just because i enjoy seeing them around. I do go looking for them on public land though and have no hesitation in taking them then as the population in general is very strong in the north.

Interesting. Definitely birds that the rest of us don't have. The 5 kg one would compare size wize to our wild turkey. Our mature males do get quit a bit bigger but the females are in the 4-5 kg range. Also a 'not to bright' bird.... The old toms are smarter but the young ones are plumb stupid. I get tickled at how people build up the intelligence of them when they're hunting them. I've had them darn near run over the top of me while hunting. Stay still and they are just about clueless.

Thanks for a great story and great pictures, Vaughan.

That Mirri will turn out to be a great companion.

I always found the Capercailie, that King of Game Birds to be a fascinating subject. Never had a chance to hunt them, but some day. . . :)
