Tail of two properties

Well we just came back from our yearly rice hunt and it was a very strange outcome. One property had perfect conditions for ducks and the other didn't ...so of course the the perfect property had few ducks on it and those that did were flying high and generally out of the range of the guns..where as the other, well the chaps that went there scored about 80 between them. Yes you guess it I was at the "perfect "property

Well after a couple of days of getting a couple of newbies some ducks ( and yes they got a couple ) I thought, hell I need to get some myself as I wanted to get Monty his first retrieve on ducks. So on the last day we were coming along a dam wall (which had a water channel next to it) and I saw two black ducks land...so I stalked the 100m to get into a position where I could shoot from. Well the two took off and two shots later, both were down. The one in the channel the other in thick weeds across the water.

So my liitle puppy broke at the duck hitting the water but took off with full conviction, hit the water hard, swam out, grabbed the duck and brought the duck to the shore line and sat then dropped the duck ..ok a little bit more work there but over all a good 7.5 out of 10. The other he would not go over for because he was too interested in the first one now in my game bag so we walked back around the dam to have a look. But couldn't find anything and as it was quite thick and near the water and a couple of chaps had seen three snakes already, I decided to not risk it to find. Ok so we did not get the 2nd duck but overall I am quite proud of my little pup.

Even though hunting with him in those conditions was a little bit more streesful ie on snake patrol, overall the more I hunt with my dog the more I am enjoying hunting, as it all just seems so much more enriching and relaxing. All I can say, if you are thinking about getting a dog...then STOP right now. Stop thinking and just get one, I should have done this years ago

cheers

Good job Oscar, and good dog. I've been to the rice paddies at Delta Ebra, Espania, but only for vacation. I remember my wife went down to the edge, and woa, came back with black shoes. She's lucky she didn't fall in, that mud is very soft! But, she came back with the rice

Well maybe not retrieve (though maybe next time we are doing a carry out I might need to reconsider that    ) but am starting him on more deer tracking training with some of that sambar skin from our Oct hunt.
