Robert
My wife's wiener dog is as worthless as your dogs, but she has been known to "find" her share of mischief.

You have a great looking pup, and I would bet she will be all you want her to be given a little time.Image

Spartan was good enough to save some deer liver and hoofs so I'll be using the german tracking shoes over the next few months.
That dog will be in charge of the household in a very short order.

He's one spunky little dog. Looks like he's listening pretty good. The one I had as a kid didn't listen for naught. He was always in trouble. But at least he was cute at getting in trouble... During his life he go bit no less than 3 times by rattlesnakes, run over by a couple cars, and an assortment of other booboos. Finally in his old age a car finally got him. Even then he lived over 10 years.

The funniest escapade occurred one day while I was calling coyotes with a mouth call. He had to venture along into the pasture and a whitetail doe responded to the call. She saw him and it was hillarious. She chased him all over the place. He'd go under the fence and she'd go over it. Back and forth they went till she finally decided it wasn't worth the trouble. His little short legs were moving that day. I did sort of cover him to where if she'd have gotten too close I'd have touched off a round but things played out without me having to interfere. It would have made a funny video that was for sure.

One of his favorite things was to go rabbit hunting. I'd take my 22 and we'd head for the pasture. He'd run far enough ahead to make sure that I didn't get any easy shots on a cottontail. He's see them and the chase would be on. I'd get so mad at him and he'd blow me off and do what he wanted anyway. Just like a spoiled kid. Of course back then I knew nothing of 'training' a dog so he was pretty much free to do what he wanted.

Seeing your little dog in action is providing more incentive that once our old dogs pass on that we'll opt for a Dachshound. Big enough to be a dog, small enough to be easy to take care of. Plus if we raise him with our cats they should get along just fine. Cats are cool but truly useless for anything other then eating and leaving a mess... Corjak's little one is a handfull too - provided of course that you can actually CATCH her! Like trying to catch greased lightning...

Yes, my last dog was a whippet and medium trained by this one I'm going all out as I intend her to hunt with beagles, hunt underground with jack russells and track wounded deer so she can't be running off uncontrolled.

I totally agree with you.

How a dog hunts depends largely on its breeding, and one cannot really train their dog how to hunt.

What is a must is to train one's dog to mind.

When you call it in, it MUST come in.

I have seen many hunters unable to call their dogs in, and some even carry a jacket and some dog food , because their dogs have to be collected after everyone has gone home.

Especially or a hunting breed like a hound, it takes a lot of patient training to call it in even when it is hot on a trail, but, I believe, it must be done. :)

Here's the dog eating spartan's fallow deer foot. I'll be using it for tracking, before she eats it all

Great going mchughcb. :)

The more you work your dog, the better he will get.

Maintain your patience, lots of love and keep expectations low.

Before you know it, he will amaze you and make you a proud owner :)

I was out hunting and my hunting buddy managed to bag this sambar about 300m in front of us, so we let the little dog have a sniff. Once she worked out it was food there was no holding her back

boy that was a big effort 7 hour carry out :romance-ballandchain:
