A quick question on the "Teckel"; in one of my books on Deutsch Kurzhaar's has a photo captioned "...Teckel (wire haired Dashhound)"
Now I've subsequently believed that a "teckel" is a German named for any wirehaired Dachshound - is this just a product of a bad translation?

Any chance you could explain what the German hunting dog qualifications involve?

All dachshunds are called dackels. Only a dackel that has passed his hunting qualifications can be called a teckel (and they get a tattoo in their left ear to prove it - all pure bred dackels get a tattoo in their right ear).

If I recall correctly, there are three tests (for earth dogs) to be considered a master hunter. The first is a basic tracking/trailing test with fairly fresh blood. The second is a more demanding tracking/trailing test with minimal blood aged for up to 24-48 hours. The third is the finding a dachs (badger) or Fuchs (fox) in an underground warren including many false turns, backtracks etc... I am not too concerned about Mauser, but the handler is also "graded" and my German while not bad for ordering food - getting directions, probably isn't quite up to snuff for passing the quals.

So it looks like the landscaper will be into fix the backyard next week and the champion breeder down the road has 4 mini short hair dachshunds ready for sale. I want two, the missus wants one and female so we'll see who wins the cuteness stakes

Spartan was good enough to save some deer liver and hoofs so I'll be using the german tracking shoes over the next few months.

I'd be investing in a Garmin Astro GPS collar ASAP if planning on taking her to NSW where electronic trackers are mandated - forget the UHF toys and smuggle yourself in a GPS unit. A mate uses one on his GWP and hasn't lost signal dispite hunting some very thick country in the rain in NE Vic

My wife has one that would pass for a twin to yours except Macy is almost as big around as she is long.

Yesterday she saw her first hare and she was on the scent.



then the hare took off. Still learning but pretty quick.

The dogs head is whats blocking the first photo, the hare is the little bit of brown in the middle of the green grass.

Tried the tracking vest today but the dog didn't take to kindly to the straight jacket for a while

Too cute! I bet she is fun to have around. Probably gets into trouble every few minutes... We've got two old dogs, one Border Collie and one Rotweiller/Austrailian Sheperd cross. Both good dogs but they don't do anything but eat and sleep. We're thinking when they pass on that we'll get a dachshound... I had one as a kid and he was a terror. Seeing that one of yours makes it look like a really good idea.
