Oooops I did it again

Post by SPEEDY »

I know I was looking for a small scent trailing hound that could reterive and was aiming to get a Dachshund, not much luck there as there were no standards around and all the breeders were imposible to deal with.

Then by pure chance while out shopping around town with the missus we found our new dog, it turned out that a pure sent hound was not on the cards, instead I wound up with a Whippet :o

Now I have always had coursing hounds, Staghounds, Wolfhounds and greyhounds. This time I wanted a small dog that would be easy to look after and it turns out I could get a small sight hound, with a great nose (turns out their used for blood trailing also) and they have been used in the UK to reterive birds.

Their not the best at scent or fetching back birds, but they can do it and do it well with a bit of training, so she might just work out well.

My cousin had a whippet, and it was a real sweet dog.

Its my 1st, but I have had them running with my hounds, found them a little shy but keen and agile with a nose to hunt them out.

Socialize it a lot. Take it with you when ever you get the chance. Introduce it o lots of new people, and in unfamiliar settings. That will help with the shy thing.

I have had shy hounds before, my last was real shy, I find them to be better hunters in the end as they think rather then just jumping in and chasing.

Good luck. I had a whippet, great hunting dog. You must train them to come when you call them otherwise you will never catch them. Very low maintenance dogs.

She already comes to name or whistle after two days and she is picking up sit too.

I need to get some pig and deer blood to teach her blood tracking in a couple of months but she seems very smart and is getting a lot less shy already.

Toilet training will take a bit, but the other dog is helping with that. She had a couple of goes at bossing the pup but there starting to sort it out as well.
