Another from the UK

Post by HME »

As a long time Blaser user I only recently found this site. I live in the South West of the UK, not far from Willie Gunn, and own and run a rifle range and deer management and stalking business (www.coriniumrange.com) I shoot 243, 6.6 x 55, 308 and 264 win mag on 2 pro synthetic stocks and one grade 5 wooden stock with Swarovski Z6I's and titanium moderators. Looking forward to some interesting reading.

Kind regards

Paul.

Thanks to all for the welcome. I've been looking for a while Dom, just recently had to join the internet revolution though hence the website!

Seth, the DSC is the Deer Stalking Certificate which is ultimately part of the DMQ, the deer management qualification. The level 1 is as it states really, the first part of the course which entails learning about the different species of deer we have in the UK, their identification, their ecology and behaviour as well as how to prepare the animal to enter the food chain entailing gralloching (gutting) and inspecting the organs for signs of disease (in the UK we have several notifiable diseases) of which TB (Tuberculosis) is the most common. A shooting test is also taken. Some police forces in the UK like potential deer stalkers to take the Level 1 before issuing a firearms certificate, personally I don't think this is a bad idea as it shows commitment from an individual. We are one of only 2 European countries who have no compulsory firearms training. It is becoming apparent that this is changing whether we like it or not. The DSC level 2 goes a step further where an individual is assessed during a stalk where he or she is expected to prove proficiency in stalking, identifying correctly, shooting, inspecting and preparing an animal for the food chain. This is a more stringent test hence why there are only 2-3000 of us with it in the UK. I have recently become a witness in order to help people gain this qualification.

Sadly our firearms laws are some of the toughest in the world, a cross we have to bear, and if our politicians and our ill informed public have their way they will become tougher still. This is one of the reasons I built the range and set up the business I did, revolving around training in order to bring as many people into our sport as safely as possible.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards

Paul.

Yes there is also a Deer Stalking Certificate out here in OZ as well it's called "well you want to go Sambar hunting then help carry the bugger out      However on a serious side of things I can see in time it been part of your authority to hunt deer to have certification like what you have. But it will be more of a money spinning exercise than any else. Most likely run by Errol Mason
