Woodleigh 9.3 250gr RNSN and light skinned game?

Post by 6.5x55 »

Anyone used the 250gr RNSN Woodleigh in 9.3 on lighter skinned game? Goats/fallow?

If so, any feedback would be appreciated.

Contemplating taking the 9.3x62 out for a walk as it's been in the dark for far too long. I'm concerned about straight pass through without much expansion.
Otherwise I'll stick to the 6.5x55 and leave the 9.3 for larger game.

FWIW, I've shot some roe deer with 286gr RNSN from my x62. Max range maybe 150m, mostly less. Worked fine. Small hole in, small hole out. Dead deer and little meat damage. I would interpret the effects as fairly minimal expansion but still plenty of internal tissue damage from behind the shoulder shots. If in doubt, you could always aim to break the shoulders.....

I only have very limited experience with the 9.3s on lighter game. Mainly wild pigs in northern Australia. I have used Woodleighs pretty exclusively in my 9.3s and never found any issues with them expending across the bullet weighs I have used. I have used up to 286gn Woodleighs on pigs in my 9.3x62 and had all one shot kills.

I loaded my 9.3x64 with Woodleigh 320gn round nose bullets for a pig hunt in central QLD on a friends cattle property. I shot 2 medium to large sows and both were absolutely flattened with the shot. With the second, it was front on looking towards me after I put the first shot into the sow next to it. I aimed for the centre of the chest, but must have pulled the aim as I let the shot off, so only hit down the left had side. As far as I could tell I only took out one lung, but the pig dropped on the spot without moving.

Should also add that I think the RN is more likely to expand well then an equivalent PP. I tend to prefer the RNs for that reason

They work really well on Fallow. 3 from 3 :handgestures-thumbup:

I've shot a ton of goats with the 9.3x62, either the PPU soft factory rounds or the 286gn Partition, I liked the Partition and I'd imagine that the lighter 250gn woodleigh would do the job.
I'm soft and I don't care.

The 270gr Hornady are about the thinnest of the 9.3 projectiles. I’ve shot goats with the 286gr PPU projectile. It just smashes them. Deals to possums too. I’ve got a pic somewhere of sectioned 9.3 projectiles. I’ll try and find it.

Thanks👍. The 270gr mentioned are the Speer or the Hornady?

Also I read somewhere PPU do a 193gr projectile in 9.3. That would be interesting...
