9.3 X 62 vs 300 WM

I have both and the 9.3x62 is just an amazing cal. There's nothing really you can't hunt with it. I've shot out to 500m with it and was surprisingly very accurate with the 250gr Noslers accubonds. I've loaded the 286gn, 250gr rnsn and the hydro's in woodleigh. Also the good old Tug"s or their new name now, the uni classic. I've taking a few deer with them no problems at all. The 300 win bag is also a handy cal as it gives you a bit of legs with a strong amount of punch if needed and is also an ok cal for walking around as well.

I find the 30/06 and 9.3x62 make a great pair of old timers. A perfect match for the discerning travelling hunter.
The 300win definitely has more legs, but I see as more for the hunting shooter then the hunting stalker.

I chose the 300 Win Mag over the 9.3X62 when I minimized my Blaser Barrel collection to just four calibers. But I wish I would have shot my Bison with the 9.3X62 rather than the 300 Win Mag. Although the 300 Win Mag with a 200 grain Nosler Partition did the job, the 9.3X62 with a 286 grain Nosler Partition would have been superior. I don't think the 300 Win Mag has anything to offer until ranges get beyond 350 yards.

I'm pretty new to the 8x68s but yes, what a round! If I had to clear my safe and keep just one bbl, I might just chose the 8x68s over the 9.3x62. It would be a tough choice. Not sure it does anything the 300wm can't but it does it all with more style

Agree. And it's a thick edge.

I remember when you couldn't get brass for them and was very hard. Then Winchester brought loaded ammo out and over night it was the new creedmoor of its time.

Yes you are certainly right. It’s very tolerable to shoot in a standard weight rifle but provides plenty of power to get even the biggest job done.

On another note I remember reading a post made on here by Bob Stokes years ago (I think) regarding about how the 9.3x62 Mauser was used for surprisingly smaller game in Germany than most people would think. It really is very versatile. If I was ever forced to own just one cartridge for big game it would definitely be the 9.3x62 Mauser.

Yet the euro ammo is still the standard, now trying to find 9.3x74R cases is pretty slim pickings, I might have to buy another 100-150 to load up reduced cast bullet loads for rolling pigs with.
I figure trailboss and a 290gn pure or close enough anyway lead cast bullet should match or just out do the 44mag with less noise and recoil.
Shame you can't get a 9.3x74R Stutzen barrel for the K95, now that would be the perfect deer stalking rifle in my book.

I don't have any personal experience with the 9.3 but I'm sure it has plenty of power for a Moose. The 300wm would be more forgiving, depending on the load - but I'm also more familiar with that caliber and ballistics, etc.

Like a lot of non-Europeans, you guide probably has no experience with the 9.3X62. Take it a give him an education.
