9.3 X 62 vs 300 WM
Hi, I'm new to Blaser and have an R8 9.2 X 62 that I acquired with my Professional Success. I'm not familiar with the 9.3 X 62. I'm heading moose hunting in eastern Canada and the outfitter is saying that it won't have the stopping power required beyond a couple of hundred yards. He's recommended that I bring at least a 300 WM. A friend suggested I ask for opinions on that here.

9.3x62 has plenty of power for 200m on just about anything.
I wouldn't hesitate to take one.

FWIW, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a Scandi moose out to 250m with my 9.3x62. I don't think I've actually shot one with it beyond 230m but near enough. If you might reasonably go beyond that, I would be happier with the 300wm as well but I'm sure the 9.3 would still work. The buggers always run anyway

I shot an Alaskan moose with a 9.3x74R ( ballistic ally identical to 9.3x62) it killed the moose just fine. Trajectory and expansion may be problematic past 300 yards.

Re: 6.3 X 92 vs 300 WM
As MM said past 300 yards trajectory and expansion may be an issue.
So if there’s a good chance that shots will be in excess of 300 yards then the 300WM would be my choice (that’s if you don’t have a 30/06
)
I should also add, that border closures dependent, I’m booked for a NW Canada moose hunt in 2022. I’m taking my 30/06 barrel loaded with 180 grain partitions. Mainly because I can expect longer shots and maybe I’ll also get a chance at a goat.
Cheers

Are you handloading?
If you are just load Barnes 250 grain and use the 9.3.

Re: 6.3 X 92 vs 300 WM
I'd go the 250gn Accubond, but I Gus's it's on of those 6 of one things, but the accubond has a good BC but both will keep up with a 338win mag out to about 250m, then the higher BC of the 338 starts to gain.
But I've kills plenty of goats back in the day out to 300m with factory 286gn loads, but it did have a good but of drop. But I'm sure if I could pole axe goats at that range, 200m on a moose would be a much easier shot.
I did find 250m to be the butter zone maximum range, out to there it was pretty easy and I only zeroed 1.5" high at 100m.

Re: 6.3 X 92 vs 300 WM
Your outfitter is ill informed, I have killed moose with both 300 WinMag and the 9.3X62 and found the 9.3X62 more decisive, although either is good enough. Many African countries allow the 9.3X62 to be used on thick skinned dangerous game where they do not allow the 300 WinMag.
As to range, the 300 Win Mag will have an edge beyond 350 yards, but it is a poor outfitter that plans on his clients shooting that far. I've shot my 9.3X62 out to 600 yards and accuracy was fine, but velocity is below minimum expansion threshold. For that reason I would limit shots to under 400 yards with the 250 grain Nosler Accubond.
Here is a thread I put together on the subject a few years ago. https://www.blaserbuds.com/forum/viewto ... long+range

A 6.3x92. What sort of action is that?

I have only taken Moose in British Columbia at 70 yds and Black Bear at 150 yds with the 9.3x62, 250gr TTSX. My son has taken Black Wildebeest in Africa with the 9.3x62, 250gr TTSX, at 300 yds. Our muzzle velocities ranged from 2500-2550fps. You should have no problems out to 350-400 yds.

Re: 6.3 X 92 vs 300 WM
You shouldn’t have a problem getting within 300 yards of a moose. My guide told me to leave the 300 at home and bring the 9.3. I hand load the 286 grn. Partition and 300 yards is my limit with that load because I am worried about reliable expansion past that point.

I liked the 286gn partition too, it works at close range and right out, as far as the various 9.3's can launch them anyway.
