Hornady AOL guage and making your own modified cases for it....

Post by Joe338ST »

So your into reloading and you want to know your AOL of your chamber for a wildcat cartridge (from base of cartridge to the lands for a particular projectile) and you have a Hornady OAL guage, but Hornady do not have off the shelf cartridges for you calibre. Do you send brass to Hornady or do you make your own....? Also you feel your chamber may be a little longer than standard because your reloads don't fit in your mate's rifle which is the same caliber. You don't have a lathe - so can you make your own modified cases - you certainly can and this is how I do it....

The AOL guage we are talking about....

What you will need is:
1. Cleaned fired brass for your chamber - preferably fired 3 times ..... and cleaned in a tumbler....
2. The full length resizing die for your caliber, and if you have the seating die - the locking ring of that die....
3. A tap and drill bit to suit the tap - I got mine from eBay® and the size is 1x HSS Hand Tap UNEF UNS NFF 5/16" X 36 RH M2 ISO +tapping drill
4. A holder for the tap
5. A set of drill bits
6. A power drill
7. Reloading press
8. Sandpaper

Now remove the de-priming stem that also has the expander ball out from the die....

Note the die being screwed in upside down into the reloading press... later I found it was better to screw the locking ring ( black colored ring) from above with a 2nd locking ring to stop the die from turning....see in a later picture when the brass was fully threaded....

Die screwed into the press.....with a locking ring on top...note the locking ring on the under surface of the press is also best placed on top to prevent the die from turning .... so both black locking rings should be on top....

Push the brass into the die firmly with thumb pressure. Make sure the die and the brass are not lubricated...

Start drilling the case. Keep drill bit as vertical as you can and drill quickly. Use safety glasses and a lubricant like Inox or CRC....The primer pocket will give you the direction you need.
