Re: Does the 20G make the 28G obselete for hunting?
I hunted most of last season with a 28ga Chapuis. I shot about 150 pheasant using RST No5 one ounce loads. I also used 12 and 20s and couldn’t tell a difference in performance, as all used 1 oz of shot. The 28g weighed 6 lb 3 oz, however, and I sold it to help pay for a lighter gun. My bespoke 20 ga weighs 5 lb 6 oz and I’m looking to buy a 5 lb 28ga.

Shotguns are not one of my strong points, but the best I can tell, fit and technique matter more than gauge, especially for upland hunting. Shot a 20 gauge mostly all my life. Borrowed a friends SxS 28 a few years ago, and I shot it so well everyone assumed I was a pro. Probably it just fit me well. Do not need another hobby, or I would explore shotguns and how they work a bit more.

When I was a competitor in the game of Skeet, I competed in all four gauges, 12, 20, 28 and .410. My scores were extremely linear with the highest scores to lowest scores following largest gauge to smallest. This was true for me and also for everyone else training with me at Colorado Springs.
Gun fit could be completely removed from the variables because I shot the same gun with four different barrel sets, fit was the same for all.
I think Skeetshot is much more competent than I in this field. I would be interested to hear what he has to say.

I have an itch for a 28, but at almost 81, a nice one does not amortize out really well.
As an alternative, I intend to open dove season using my Pigeon Superposed twenty with 7/8 oz AA. If I can find them locally, I may take my twelve SP IV stoked with the 26 gram (.85 oz). Weight of the gun is neglible as my shooting will be from a shooting chair in the shade. Chigger will fetch my birds.
Enjoy,
Jack

Sounds like the way to do it, comfortable chair in the shade, lite kicking gun and a dog to fetch your birds.
Definitely a nice way to do it.

I'm soft and I don't care.
