Could be right there. A smaller teal would be much better. That hard head was massive. Just check out the splash when it hit the deck. It was heavy alright. I went fox hunting came back in an hour and the wind had blown it ashore.
Yeah it just bit it to make sure it was dead and then left it. I'm not sure why. When I came back in an hour after a fox hunt the wind had blown it to shore. She almost ripped its head off. When I carried it back to the Suzuki she jumped out and ripped it clean out of my hand. I guess she was a bit nervous as that's the first time she's gone into deep water with the game still in there and doesn't have the size of a larger dog just to chomp it if things went wrong.
That's why I take a telescopic fishing rod with a big treble hook.
Just cast and retrieve, that and I didn't like getting too close to the water up north.
The first duck retrieve my young Drahthaar made was similar, he picked it up by the tail feathers and when they pulled out, he proudly brought back the feathers to me. I sent him in again, and that time he brought back the whole duck. He never had that problem again and was a very reliable retriever. So there is hope.
