Hunting Optics Batteries
Is it usual practice to leave batteries in your rifle scopes, and other hunting optics?
I do and have not had any issues...yet.
What’s the consensus?

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
Concur, I leave them in because my firearms are stored in a climate controlled environment indoors.
If you happen to store guns where they could be subjected to freezing temperatures for prolonged periods, then (some) batteries might be affected. I know in the past people have been told to store batteries in the freezer or refrigerator, but the possible extended battery life is offset by the greater risk of condensation.
Also, some electronics will slowly discharge batteries even if the device is turned off. I have (not) found this to be the case with Swarovski, Leica, Kahles, and Zeiss optics.
Regards,

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
I think if I were to take the battery out of a field optic there would be a very good chance I would forget to put it back in before use. I do try to keep a spare battery in my day pack or range bag but even that is a hit or miss, then again I can lose things faster than a blink of an eye.

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
I might start leaving mine in I’ve always taken the batteries out of anything that I don’t intend to use on a very regular basis.

I might start taking mine out. I’ve always left the batteries in everything.

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
I've seen on the old alkaline batteries that leak and corrode the connections but not with the LiON batteries, rechargeable or non rechargeable.

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
I find it strange that there is no definitive answer to this.
I have never seen a new style button battery leak either.
I notice that the instruction manuals of the scopes, range finders etc don’t give a clear answer either....at least the brands I own.
That fact in itself, makes me think that they may leak and cause serious damage.

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
They "may" and if I was planning to store an illuminated scope for a long time (years) I'd take the battery out. But I use all my scopes, range finders etc routinely, don't own enough kit to have stuff put away for years, so the batteries tend to go flat and be replaced from time to time so I've never given it much thought. You have made me thin though.... I have a bunch of other stuff like dog beepers and things of that sort that I should do some maintenance on this winter..

Yeah I agree. If I am useing regularly, they will stay in. But if stored for longer periods of time it is probably wise to take them out.

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
Don't see any point in taking out button batteries or RF batteries, BUT I do check them all from time to time.
I do take the rechargeables out of some NV stuff because of parasitic drain when left in. Can get a nasty surprise if not used for a while and not checked, so I take 'em out.(and still check before use)

Re: Hunting Optics Batteries
Mine stay in, never had or even seen one ever leak. These are all the round/flat mostly 1032s though.
