168 grain Sierra Tipped Match King

Post by stokesrj »

(Cartridge) 308 Winchester

(Brand of bullet) Sierra

(Weight of bullet) 168 grains

(Brand of brass) Federal

(Type of powder) IMR8208XBR

(Grains of powder) 43.5 grains

(Brand, and type of primer) Federal GM210M

(COAL) 2.830"

(CBTO) 2.124"

(FPS/MPS) 2659 FPS Average, 17 Extreme Spread, 9.5 SD

(Rifle) Blaser R8

(Barrel Length) 16.5"

(Scope) Swarovski Z8i 1.7-13.3X42

(Weather conditions & temp) light ready wind 4-5 MPH,

(Accuracy @ 100 yards/meters) Sub 1/2 MOA

(Notes) This load is optimized for a short barrel yet still provide high velocity. The Black Hills loading of this bullet is listed as 2647 fps from a 24" barrel. The Hodgdon load data list max at 43 grains so this is over book max but is safe in my rifle with no signs of high pressure. Cases fired with this load are good for at least six loadings.

Wow, great velocity from a 16.5 inch barrel.
And accurate, might work well in your 308 Stutzen...

Well I guess you could say it is braked, it has an internal brake, inside the Thunder Beast Ultra 7 silencer. It is very pleasant to shoot with the silencer attached, both recoil and muzzle blast are handled well. I have shot it with the silencer removed but the brake still attached, it is quite obnoxious that way. You definitely would not want to use it in the field that way. There are some pics in this thread about the rifle. viewtopic.php?f=34&t=15876&hilit=short+ ... 08#p180474

I'm surprised by the speed, I'm getting 2700fps from a 168gn A-max with 43gn of the same powder.
I might work up that extra 1/2 grain and see what it does from a 22" barrel.
I'm soft and I don't care.

That is precisely why I picked the .308 as my caliber for short barrel applications. It does really well compared to other calibers in short barreled applications. I did a ladder test with this barrel before it was shortened and after cutting so you can see that 43.0 grains of IMR8208 XBR got 2702FPS before it was shortened. For reasons I can't fully explain I am getting a bit higher velocities here in Arizona than I was in Florida, not much but about 40 fps or so more.

What is the velocity of this round?
From the amount of vihta 140 powder and coal you are using I assume that the velocity is a bit low, somewhere maybe below 750 m/s. If I have to guestimate I would say it will be something like 720 m/s.

Best regards,
Jordan

Ha - If only I new the velocity - been waiting two and a half months for my LabRadar to be returned from the UK importer after it stopped working. I expect 720 m/s is about right, I'll let you know when I get to measure them - need that for my ballistics calculations!

Finally got my LabRadar back and the average velocity for the above hand loads are 2547 FPS or 777 M/S.
